ALABAMA

A Wetumpka Welcome.

Wetumpka has a population of about 7,000 people and that makes for an interesting life here in our small town. There are so many interesting things about our little piece of heaven. It is said that 83 Million years ago a meteor hit here and there is an impact creator to prove it. Wetumpka is named after the Creek word meaning “rumbling waters”. When the Indian Removal Act (1830) was put into action, the Indians who moved from Wetumpka renamed the part of Oklahoma they moved to the same. We also have three major rivers flowing through us the Alabama, Tallapoosa, and Coosa Rivers. Those rivers led to the construction of two historic sites, Fort Toulouse and Fort Jackson. Downtown is still a historic place with many old buildings and the Bibb Graves Bridge. You may have even seen our town in a movie “Big Fish,” “The Rosa Parks Story,” and “The Grass Harp” witch were all filmed here. So you can see why you would enjoy a visit here, Tocqueville did, and I can’t wait for you to experience it either. Come and enjoy small town life in Wetumpka, Alabama.

Hello from Mrs. Kruse's First Grade class at Presidio School! We have 13 students in our class, and we are learning many things. Each week, we have classes in Tae Kwon Do, Art, Dance, Music, and Sign Language. This year, we will learn about how people live now, and how people lived in very long ago times, all over the world, about the continents, rocks and minerals, about many famous people, fun math facts and how to use them, and many other exciting things, like how to take care of our class fish.

We wish you could come to visit us in Tucson, Arizona, because it is lots of fun here.  Right now, it is very hot, but most of the year, we have perfect weather for playing outside. Some of the animals that live here are javelina, coyotes, roadrunners, quail, foxes, and eagles and hawks. We have lots of desert plants, like saguaro cacti, Palo Verde and mesquite trees, ocotillo and prickly pear cactus.  Mrs. Kruse likes to make jelly from the prickly pear cactus fruit, and she said she will bring some to school for us when the fruit is ripe. Tucson is a good place for growing other plants, like roses and fruit trees, too.

We love our school, and the Character Counts Pillars we use. (Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship).  Presidio School is for kindergarten through high school, and some of the big kids come into our class to help us learn. We think that's cool.

We can hardly wait to start sending postcards to each other!

Your postcard friends,

Russell Elementary is the newest school in Santa Rosa County. We live in Milton which is one of the oldest cities in Florida having been founded in 1844. One of the major industries in the 1800s was lumber so the name Milton is thought to come from Mill Town. We're in the western part of the Florida panhandle near Pensacola which just celebrated the 450th anniversary of its founding. There's a lot of history in our area! While our summers can be really hot and we have experienced our share of hurricanes, our weather is generally mild. We're close to the most beautiful beach in the world--Pensacola Beach. The sand is white and the water is beautiful. We live in a wonderful place!

GEORGIA

Marietta, Georgia is a busy community just north of Atlanta, Georgia, the proud home of the 1996 Summer Olympic Games.  General Lucius Clay, who administered to Germany after World War II, and Travis Tritt, a famous country music performer, hail from Marietta.  We enjoy all four seasons here; our summers are hot and our winters are mostly mild.  It is a rare treat when it snows here; we are always wishing and hoping for a snow day from school!  Marietta was a railroad and hospital town during the War Between the States.  The Great Locomotive Chase took place here, along with an infamous Civil War battle where the Union forces suffered heavy casualties.  Most of the downtown area of Marietta was destroyed when it was set on fire at the start of Sherman's March to the Sea.  Today it is beautifully restored and has shops, restaurants, and a central park with an awesome model of The Great Locomotive Civil War train.  Each day young children enjoy playing there.  The young people of our community love to play sports like baseball, football, soccer, swimming, lacrosse, cross-country, and rugby on school, church, and neighborhood teams.  Many kids enjoy going to the Atlanta Braves (baseball), Atlanta Falcons (football), Atlanta Hawks(basketball, and Atlanta Thrashers (hockey) games with their parents. Locally, there is a very large waterpark called White Water that is a favorite summer hang-out.  When people come to Marietta from other states and countries, they will often visit the Kennesaw National Battleground, The Great Locomotive Museum, the National and Confederate Cemeteries, and the Margaret Mitchell (author of the classic book Gone With the Wind) Museum. Many tourists also like to make the short ride into Atlanta to visit the world-famous Georgia Aquarium and the Coca-Cola Museum.  We hope one day you may be able to visit Marietta where we can show you some true "Southern hospitality!"

Benjamin Franklin Elementary is a Great school, it is located in uptown New Orlaens. There are giant oaks providing shade to the front yard. There is a Kaboom playground in the back. We have the Weatherbug set up on our roof this year.

New Orleans is the BIG EASY because we enjoy life through our festivals, music and spicy foods. The city comes alive during Mardi Gras, the French Quarter Festivities, the Jazz Fest as folks from all over the world come here to celebrate our unique heritage. A bowl of hot Gumbo, a few deliciously powdered beignets with chicory cofee, shrimp or catfish poboys dripping with hot sauces and raw oysters from the bay lure many to the city. Mardi Gras is the main attraction for tourists and the whole city is moving/dancing as if in a dream.

NEW YORK

Hello from Long Island, New York

Long Island is located at the southeastern tip of New York, with a population of about 7.7 million people. We are located about one hour from Manhattan. We can easily jump on a train and enjoy all the adventure that a big city has to offer.  New York is well known for their pizza and bagels; you can find a bagel store and pizzeria in just about every town on long island.

Gorgeous beaches surround us here on Long Island. Our school is about two miles from the beach. As a matter of fact, our school symbol is the scallop shell because of the close proximity to the water.  Many Long Islanders take advantage of the summer by enjoying the beautiful beaches. We do enjoy all four seasons here but summer seems to be the favorite season for most Long Islanders.

Harbor Country Day School is an old mansion that was converted into a school 51 years ago. We are an independent school with about 150 students enrolled from pre-k to eighth grade. Many of the students at Harbor enjoy playing soccer, horseback riding, swimming and reading.

There are many famous people that were born here on Long Island. Billy Joel, Mariah Carey, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Lindsey Lohan, LL Cool J, Rosie O’Donnell and the Baldwin’s have all grown up in this area.

Saratoga Independent School is located in beautiful Saratoga Springs, NY. This historic city is about 40 minutes north of the state capital, Albany, and three hours north of New York City. Saratoga Springs is known for its natural springs and mineral waters, the lovely architecture of its historic buildings, and the Saratoga Race Course (home to the New York Racing Association for six weeks each summer). We are also fortunate to have the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, which features the New York City Ballet, Philadelphia Orchestra and a variety of concerts each summer. The city is also home to Skidmore College, several excellent museums (including the National Museum of Dance and Hall of Fame, and the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame), and nearby is the Saratoga National Park, which includes an important battlefield site where American forces defeated the British during the Revolutionary War. We are fortunate to live in a city with such a rich history and culture, four vibrant seasons, and a beautiful surrounding countryside.

Portland is a great town! It got its name from a coin toss in 1845. Lovejoy wanted to name it Boston and Pettygrove wanted to name it Portland. Guess who won! Portland is also know as the city of Roses. Every year we have a Rose Festival with many parades, an amusement park and high school students are chosen as princesses. Portland gets a lot of rain in the spring and sometimes snow in the winter. It is a great place to live. We are close to Mt. Hood for skiing and snowboarding. The Pacific Ocean is also a short drive. You can play on the beach, build sand castles or fly a kite. Our city has a lot of people who ride their bike instead of driving. We are trying to live green and take care of the Earth.

Our class is from Philadelphia, PA.  Our city has wonderful things to visit such as the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, the Art Museum, and so much more.  When you are downtown, you sometimes feel like you are living back in the 1700's or 1800's because of the old buildings and the tour guides.  Some famous people from our city are Betsy Ross (who created the American flag), Benjamin Franklin (who invented many things and helped with the creation of our nation), and Will Smith (the actor).  We have 4 seasons here.  It doesn't snow much during the winter, but it does get pretty cold.  The fall is beautiful when all of the leaves change colors.  During the summer it sometimes gets hot and humid!  Philadelphia is a great place, you should come and visit!

In the winter, many people travel here to ski. During the other months people travel here to see the beautiful scenery! This area is known for coal mines. Pennsylvania is a great state to learn about because many important historical events took place in Philadelphia. We live about two hours away but take many class trips! TEXAS

Welcome to La Marque, Texas from Ms. Aaron’s 3rd Grade Class at Shekinah Radiance Academy!  La Marque is located in the southeast portion of Texas and just 12 miles from Galveston Island and 45 minutes from Houston.  The community was originally known as Highlands, because it is located near the Highland Creek. However in the1890s, Madam St. Ambrose renamed the city to La Marque, which in French means "the mark’ because the original name was already being used. Our city is the hometown of Kay Bailey Hutchison who is known for being the first woman to represent Texas in the United States Senate.  Also, one of our teachers at Shekinah is the aunt to the famous singer Beyonce.  Due to the warm Texas sun and the cool breezes from the Gulf of Mexico, we are lucky to have summer all year long. We have really never experience a cold winter where there is snow and ice.  However, we must deal with a possible chance of hurricanes hitting our gulf coast.   We can honestly say we survive Hurricane Ike which directly hit our area last September.  After Hurricane Ike, our community worked together as one to rebuild our city.  There isn’t much to do in La Marque but we enjoy visiting surrounding cities for some fun in the sun.  We like to put our feet in the warm sand and swim in the gulf on the beaches of Galveston.  Also, we like to go to Kemah Boardwalk to feed the stingrays and ride rides such as “The Bullet” (a huge rollercoaster) and the Ferris wheel. There are also numerous places to shop and eat at in our city.  We hope that you have learned a little about our city La Marque, Texas!

Welcome to Wisconsin!  We are the land of humid 90 degree summers and -20 degree bone-chilling winters. We are fortunate to have four seasons, all completely different from one another. We enjoy fishing, beaches, boating, hiking, biking, and swimming during our summers, and sledding, snowshoeing, ice skating, catching snowflakes on our tongues, drinking hot chocolate with marshmallows, and building snow forts in the winter.

We love our Packer and our Badger teams here in Wisconsin . . . Fall is here and we have launched into football season! We enjoy tailgating before and after football games.  Tailgating is when people pack the car, park on lawns or in parking lots, eat brats, hamburgers, chili, and lots of other delicious food, and get excited for the game. And yes, we even tailgate outside in negative temperatures!  BRRR!

Since Wisconsin is the Dairy State, it has a lot of rural areas and farmland.  But we also have larger urban areas like Milwaukee and Madison. Whether looking for open fields, hills, and plains, or a bustling city, Wisconsin has something for everyone!

AUSTRIA

Hello from Vienna!

Vienna is a beautiful big city of about 1.8 million people, which lies directly on the Danube River.  Our school is right near a channel of the Danube.  We like to walk or ride bikes along the promenade and look at the ships going up and down the waterway.  The bridges are lit up at night too, and it is simply lovely.

The official language of Austria is German, but many people who live in Vienna come from other countries, so you can hear a lot of different languages being spoken in the restaurants, on the trams, and on the subway.

It is easy to get around without a car.  You can get everywhere with public transportation, which is very clean, safe, and punctual.  Usually it is faster than taking a car.  Other countries often send people to look at the great transportation system here.

The city is divided into 23 districts.  The first district is actually the oldest part of Vienna.  In fact, it was the ONLY part of Vienna until about 100 years ago, when the walls surrounding it were torn down and large boulevards were built in their place.  Along this boulevard there are important buildings, like the city hall, the university, the parliament, the national theater, the imperial court, the national opera, the art history museum, and the natural history museum.  You can see many of these buildings on the postcard gallery.

Right in the middle of the first district is St. Stephan's Cathedral.  If you climb up the tower, you can get a good view of the whole area.  You can also take a tour under the courtyard area, where there are stacks of bones in the crypts.

If you like ships, you can ride a ship up or down the Danube River.  In about an hour you can already be by boat in Bratislava, Slovakia.

Vienna is surrounded by forests.  Many people like to go hiking there, especially in the Fall and Spring.  Vienna has four distinct seasons, but during the last years the winter has been fairly mild with only a little bit of snow.  Some of the animals which live here are red squirrels, badgers, beavers, foxes, deer, rabbits, pheasants, wild pigs, and bears--typical forest animals.  As for birds, there are a lot of pigeons, black ravens, sparrows, swallows, and woodpeckers.  We don't have any poisonous snakes to speak of, and only one poisonous spider called a cross spider because it has a cross on its back.

Most Austrians are Roman Catholic, but there is also a large Protestant community, a middle-sized Islamic community, and a tiny Jewish community.

Austria is a democracy.  People age 16 and over can vote.  In Vienna itself, even people who don't have Austrian citizenship can vote if they live there.

Austria has a wonderful medical system.  Everybody has to pay into it from his wages, but medical treatment is free.  Medicine is also almost free, the patient only pays a small subscription fee regardless of how expensive the medicine really cost.  The doctors in Austria are known to be very competent.  People come from all over the world to the hospitals here.  Austria also has many famous skiiers.  The Californian governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, was from Austria, and you all know Mozart, Haydn, and Strauss as musicians and composers as well.

The food in Austria is pretty good.  Most people love schnitzel (breaded veal or chicken)and Sacher torte (chocolate cake with apricot filling), but there are many yummy Austrian food specialties.

The native dress is a Trachten.  The girls and ladies wear a dirndl and the men where lederhosen, a gingham shirt, suspenders, and a wool jacket.

Austria gets a lot of its money from tourism and from its milk products.

Hope this will make you want to come see us!

ROMANIA

Our city of Iasi is a beautiful city.  It is a historical city where you can see many buildings, cultural and historical.  Iasi is visited by many tourists who are excited by what I see every day: The Palace of Stefan cel Mare, museums, botanical gardens and more.  Our weather is pleasant.  The summers are hot and winters are cool.  Many writers and composers were born in our city.  Please come to Iasi to see our nice, welcoming people.

We live in an area very close to Norwich. Itis in the East of England and it is very flat. The weather is often rainy! We live close to the Norfolk Broads, where people can sail and relax on the water. Norfolk has a history for farming, weaving and mustard. Horatio Nelson is a famous person from Norfolk. We like to play football, go to the beaches and bowl. In Norwich you can visit the castle, the local beaches and even travel to Cambridge or London on the train.

Fourfields is a large primayr school with 350 chidren between the ages of 4 to 11.  It is one of 3 schools in Yaxley.  Yaxley is a village (some say the largest in England) on the edge of the Fens and close to the cathedral city of Peterborough in the east of England.  Cambridge is our next nearest city.  We are about 80 miles north of London.  We live in the dries region of the UK although we still seem to get our fair share of rain!  We rarely get snow in winter and temperatures in summer average around 23 degrees.

There is a variety of clubs for children in Yaxley although for most sports activities children have to travel to other towns.
