NEW YEARS EVE IN AUSTRIA
NEW YEARS EVE IN AUSTRIA
We celebrate New Year´s Eve together with family and friends. There are parties going on everywhere and at midnight all radio stations are playing the “Donauwalzer” (“Blue Danube” by Johann Strauss) and people are waltzing in their apartments, houses and on the streets everywhere. On TV they are broadcasting the sound of the big bell in St. Stephen´s Cathedral in Vienna, the “Bummerin”. This means “The new year has begun!”.
We do fireworks and “Bleigießen” . Bleigießen is a tradition of telling what will happen during the following year by melting lead over a flame and then letting it drop into cold water. By the shape made by the molten lead you can tell your fortune. We love New Year´s Eve because even children are allowed to stay up real late !
